Good design, the angled bit at the bottom gives a nice narrow walkway with enough room at the top to get your hand in to move the figures

Cheers. Been chopping up loads of foamboard to crack on with getting a bunch of these done soon.
Casting wise if I can get a master of the ribs made up in a different material to much more accurate size I'll be able to sort out the casting. So I'm either going to need to book some time with a laser cutter and a bunch of mdf or work on my scratch building skills with plasticard.
I've also ended up looking at scratch building things like consoles and generators. Though I did find a bunch of bits from some old GWS kits I might cannibalise.
Really getting into creating stuff from scratch again.

Cool stuff. This is going to look amazing when you have a full board.

It looks like I won't be the first person to have a SW1 special table. My brother has got wind of my project and has decided he wants a board doing.
So through the power of beer I've ended up agreeing to doing his first. I was planning on doing my own 4' x 4' board but I now find myself building a full 8' x 4' board including the table!

I've ordered 50 mdf 50mm squares in 3mm mdf. Nowhere near enough to cover the boards but I'll use them to make masters from and cast up enough tiles to cover the whole board.
There's plenty of interesting textures to work from as well as things like having a go at the Admec cog/skull and some form of aquila. Might also sneak on some iron hands iconography if I can.

Lol ... On the plus side I can practice on his and then do a stella job on mine. Also he's coughing up for the materials which includes the moulds. Which I can also then use for mine as well.

Ok ... Thoughts on casting these tiles up ... One square foot is approx 300mm by 300mm which will take 36 tiles. My board was going to be 4' x4' so taking 576 tiles so my brothers table will take 1152 tiles.
Hmmm ... I think there will be some changes to the idea behind the tiles. Might end up making several individual tiles and then casting them up in strips or bigger sheets. As long as they look right when on the board.

Sound`s like one hell of a challenge, and one i`m glad i`m not having a go at..............
I`d go with strip`s Ste, they will be easier to work with than sheet`s.......

I'm looking at it as a challenge and a test of skill. If I can find ways of speeding up the process I might even be able to make custom ordered stuff for people. There's a few people over on bnc who are wanting me to give it a go.
First step is working out exactly how to split up the board. 4' x 8' is actually 1219.2mm x 2438.4mm so if I work with 300mm square as my tile size I have some allowance for cutting down the board. As it'll end up being 1200mm x 2400mm instead. Also I won't want all tiles to be that small as we want to put some recessed details into some of the boards and this will work better over say 600mm square.
So there will probably be 4x (600mm x 600mm) and 16x (300mm x 300mm) boards.

Here's the start of the first tile: And the recessed section I've started detailing: Think it's going to work nicely and can't wait to get the first one finished.

The 2' x 2' tiles will be where the modular part of the ground level stops. There will be removable hatches/tiles over the small recessed sections (the 4 rows of 4 small squares) which when the board is being played on as a flat surface will be in place hiding them. When there is a need for some walls the hatches will be pulled up and replaced with pillars which have grooves in them. Between the pillars, wall sections will be able to be slotted into the grooves of 2 of the pillars. The phones charged so here's how it looks now: With some tiles and the grating on (not decided on what's covering the hatches so tried smaller sections of grating on a few): Now working on the recessed sections. They'll all need blacking out before I stick stuff in as it gets hard to stick a brush in every nook and cranny. Here's the first recessed section currently squeezing in a few extra pipes (not sure how well it shows with it mainly being black on black): Will also be doing something slightly different with the longer recessed bits. They will have BIG pipes and I'm not sure exactly how detailed they'll end up looking. Currently looking like this but will definitely need some rivets!!!:
