The perfect scenery basecoat is: sand + PVA + base colour paint ;-)

I'm not 100% on the colours though. Not found anything online for a definitive good look of how to do stone. Other than grey, then lighter grey drybrush. Any ideas guys?

When I think of old stone two things come to mind. Darker color, say dark gray* on your lighter gray stone, that starts at the top and looks washed down by rain. The other is moss and lichen. The former is just a paint job with watered down gray paint. The latter can be achieved by glueing scattered spots of flock on the walls and painting them in the greenish colors appropriate for lichen and moss. Oh, I just thought of another one. Brown earth on the ground, right? Possibly on the steps of the pyramid as well since decaying leaves will be on any horizontal surface, inconsiderate little things that they are. When rain hits the ground it will spatter that dirt up the wall for some height, like up to a knee or something. Would give the walls an additional color and tie it better to the ground. You could also have clear ground (or spots covered by grass) and only around the places the earth shows would you apply muddy spots to the walls By the way, nice pyramid so far. * I realize that may only be industrial residue floating in the air and washed out by rain, but in a pre-industrial setting you can argue something like it can happen with plant spores and pollen. Of course you would choose an appropriate color for that, like something yellowish, perhaps.

Thanks for the hints, reinforces that the simple plan is going to be the most effective! So dark grey stone with grey drybrushing, green flock up the walls, brown earth with more flock patches. The final touch will be aquarium or lizard tank plastic plants.

It's what I would do. That said, throughout writing this I was thinking jungle ruins. None of what I wrote makes much sense for the fabled Norwegian ice ziggurats.

So I'm creating a bit of a shopping list for this weekend for my challenge.
First up the first lizardmen models: Skink Priest Saurus Old blood
Then it'll be off to Homebase for a reasonable sized bag of cheap sand and some dark grey paint for the first base layer of the temple Then Pets at Home for either reptile or fish plants for decoration!
So that'll be my first month's challenge under way!

Been buying stuff! First up this month's purchases: and built: Also went to Pets at Home and got this little lot: So have plenty of foliage for scenery for them all! Also got sand and a small tester of dark grey paint before getting a huge pot. Now only if it stopped raining for 5 minutes I might undercoat then

The middle bag of plants looks quite like the plants I used. If I'm right these plants are stuck to a large green plastic 'wire', but can easily be removed from it. Once that's done I just cut of the bottom part of the plants, drilled holes in my scenery pieces where I wanted the plants to go, stuck them in for a 'test' round (checking if this is the look I want -> cut of more of the bottom part of the plants to get different heights and try to mix in different plants together in the same area for a more realistic jungle look instead of a garden) and then glued them in with PVA glue. I hope this helps and I'm really looking forward to see your finished jungle pieces.

Looks promissing.
Is there actually a fluff reason why Lizardmen are either green or blue?

Probably not, I just wanted to do them green rather than blue

That's a nice green tone. And so much better than all those blueish one I always see. How are you going to paint the scales? Looks promissing. Is there actually a fluff reason why Lizardmen are either green or blue? I think they are because they are. The Dark Elves book plainly says their lizards are green without wasting a single word on why that is or if they come in different colors.
