Hmmm ... Been looking at the TDAs I've got and for funky looking characters I might try using the really old school grey knights. Getting a bit excited about this now.

The Samurai-styled ones? Ohhh, this could be good...... O yes, they are the Samurai styled ones! Grrrr ... Trying to sort out photobucket via my phone is a pile of poo. I've uploaded a pic of them but can't post now will stick them up once I get in from work in 14 or 15 hours time. What I wanted to show was the sword and book symbol is on a sun shape. If I slice the book and sword off I'll have a cog! So that will help make them more IH's looking. I can also save the pole arms to use in converting up custodes at some point. There's 3 different body positions so it won't get too similar unlike using the box standard metal TDA which all have almost the same stance.

Reckon this will be easy to convert into a cog with added details.

Finally got something sorted. All my oop rhinos will have this on the front.

Started work on assessing the damage my youthful self did to all the old school rhinos and the different associated tanks (preds/raz/whirlwind). Only OOP rhino based tank I've not got an example of is the demolisher. The ones I can save will be reinforcing the 30k armies predominantly IH's. There will be a lot of work and I think I may need to put some of my casting skills to hand to replace so of the missing bits like the circular doors as I think only a single one has survived my really lame attempts at reinforced armour. It's a shame they didn't keep the old kit in production as it has some serious character and I could have done with getting hold of a few complete kits to cannibalise. :/

Trying to decide which turrets look better for the 30k theme. Do I use these turrets as they are: Or do I ditch the boxy autocannon one and just use the rounded lascannon ones for both: I'm leaning towards having the same turrets.

The autocannon will fit in quite nicely with just a little filling in of the gaps. I've got a feeling that there's going to be lots of little bits being sorted out over time with what doesn't look like that much progress. Then everything will come together quite quickly.
The painting should take next to no time as it'll be mainly black/silver with a spot of white/red and maybe another colour for the lenses/cables/etc.
This quality over quantity malarkey is the rule of thumb on this project. Lol ... For the 1st time I'll aim to have no mould lines anywhere on the models including the bits you can't see!
This is a really big change from my previous hobby attempts.

Having managed to have a look at a mates copy of the HH first 2 books and the preds I've been working on haven't been produced yet in the HH timeline. So it looks like I'm going to be needing a lot of autocannons and possibly having a go at converting up the other turret weapon options. Lol ... Nothing's ever easy. I've also realised the bikes I wanted to use have the wrong bodies. So I've luckily managed to get hold of several chaos legs instead. I'm going to carve one into a mk6 set which is close to being finished. The other challenge is to try doing mk3 and mk4 legs as well. Once I've produced my own sets of legs they'll be cast up as needed. I've also had 31 metal beakies in dettol to strip off the old paint. Most came off and I've sprayed them with fairy power spray to get the rest off. Hoping to do the final scrub this evening after doing the lads bedtime. I'm going to use the old backpacks, arms and guns that came with them. I've managed to scrounge some riveted pads just need to source some pads for the other shoulders. I've also finally found a decent use of the over the shoulder heavy weapons I've got. They fit beautifully over mk3 pads if you shave off the rivets from the upper curve. They looked a bit outdated on 40k models so migrating them from all my 40k SM armies (including the SW's) to my 30k army has been started. The only ones which will cause a little more work are the plasma cannons which will need the built in shoulder pads rims built up so they're more like the mk3 the rest will be. Lots of prep going on and one of these days I'll surprise everyone with a pic of something painted.

Slowly chipping away at the 30k project.
I've strangely ended up doing a few SW units first after raiding the SW collection. All the metal beakies have been pulled from different squads/bits boxes and I've got 2x 5 man seeker squads on the go with combi weapons. I've also pulled a 5 man long fang squad out to use as a heavy support squad. Had a good look at the characters and found most are in older marks of armour as well so there's an iron priest, Ragnar and Njal being stripped.
That'll give me a decent starting 30k force without needing to throw lots of cash at FW. Currently going to get these done first:
Legion Praetor - Master-crafted Paragon Blade, Iron Halo ... 165pts (I'll use the Ragnar model for this)
Legion Centurion Librarian - lvl 1 (mini level allowed), Force Stave, Artificer Armour, Combat Shield ... 110pts (I'll use the Njal model for this)
Legion Centurion Forge Lord - Servo-arm, Artificer Armour, Rad Grenades, Master-crafted Bolter, Thunder Hammer, Cyber-familiar ... 130pts
Legion Seeker Squad (5 man) ... Nuncio-vox, 5 Combi-plas, Power Weapon ... 245pts
Legion Seeker Squad (5 man) ... Nuncio-vox, 5 Combi-plas, Power Weapon ... 245pts
Legion Heavy Support Squad (5 man) ... Artificer Armour, Nuncio-vox, Power Weapon, Augury Scanner, 4 Missile Launchers with Flak Missiles ... 230pts
I've even taken to converting up mk7 SW pads to mk3/mk6 pads!

Eventually I want to repaint all my SW's much darker. So these can be used as long fangs/wolf guard in 40k and the above units in 30k until the HH books covering the SW's get released then hopefully the models will be generic enough to slot into the right units!
