After the warping incident I set out to test a few, clearly more succesful, ways of basing terrain. Since I only had foamboard, I decided to try out, what seemed to a general consensus of several pieces of advice I received, and simply paint both sides of the board. Only had 3 mm left, but I figured tat would be the ultimate test then. So before anything else I painted the foamboard with just a thing layer of a cheap artshop black acrylic paint. By suggestion I had gotten some foamex - or foamalux, as it was called at my local signmaker's. Quite easy to cut, and not bendy once it's cut down to small bits like this one. Both then had a bit of details added, and then a mix of filler, black paint and various sized of gravel. They have now dried over night and look mom - NO WARPING!!!

Nice work on the terrain. The storage tank looks really good.
Vallejo liquid mask, you say? What is it and how does it work?

It's some rubbery substance, I put it on with an old brush in small patches/blobs in the area where you want to paint. Then you paiint you symbol on top of that and once the paint is dry you can gently rub off the mask with a finger, the paint under will then be visible in the blob ares, supplying a random chipping pattern. Pretty much like the old hairspray and salt method - just smarter

You're welcome. Needed a new theme and figured Void Pirates would be a good place for all kinds of crazy conversions. Does anyone know a place for some background and fluff for these buccaneers? First up is Crazy Ivan, Void Pirate Demoequilibrist and Hull Breacher.

Nice. Pirate theme is good, but I can't help you on any sources. Outside of the Red Corsairs Marine pirate empire, I think human pirates haven't had any noteworthy background since before I started 40k.

The only pirates that spring to mind are Orks and Eldar... with Squats also having pirate/mercenary roots as well.
I think a mechanicus look to pirates is a good way to progress as I would expect pirates to have a bit of a trading deal with mechanicus because they will come into contact with all manner of technological rarities that the mechanicus would be very keen to own. With that in mind, it goes hand in hand with pirates having to get bodyparts repaired/replaced due to all the skirmishing they do... and who better than the mechanicus to carry out those repairs.
One thing that I think would be important is that the pirates would never be far from their ship so they would not need to be overly encumbered with lots of kit... less items to get in the way while fighting. That doesn't include armour or weapons because good armour and a wide selection of weapons would be very apt for a pirate theme (old pirates used to carry more than a single pistol and would also have knives as well as swords).
In order to really fit in with a pirate theme, I would also suggest picking a brighter paintscheme than what you would normally choose... to make them more flamboyant.
Some of the pictures of the old Rogue Traders had them dressed in bright clothing with flamboyant feathers and frills on their clothes... and lots of stripes.
I like the 'scavenger' look of your first one but I would try not to stick to the same sort of theme... otherwise they will end up looking very similar to your Inquisitor warband.

Thanks for that very insightful lots of text Inso - some really good points in there I'll try to keep in mind. Will be interesting to both have to make 'em flamboyant and I also want to keep them dirty good challenge. Finished of the piece last night - almost anyway, as I had kind of planned adding a bit of dead grass and moss. Never really thought it was fitting for an industrial setting, but wehn you look grass and moss rapidly takes over anything as soon as it's left unused for just a short time. So I think it will be both fitting and look good too.

While I think what you did looks great, I have a little niggle with what you didn't do. The platform looks a bit, well, intact. Now I'm guessing you made this way for playability, but I think you should add a little broken version of it (or even just scraps) to the base to show that the floor isn't impervious to whatever ruined the rest of the building. The broken stone pile is nice and all, but doesn't look like it's connected to the building whose base it shares. Edit: As for the grass, it depends. On a poisoned industrial planet, you wouldn't expect grass to take over because you wouldn't expect grass to exist. Lichen, slime, mold, sure. But grass basically says nice, happy habitat, so it really depends on what you want to portray. Even if there is grass, it depends on how deep inside the city the ruined house is and how close the nearest green spot is, if there are any at all. Seeds only carry so far on the wind. Little tufts of grass are certainly not going to look off on a ruined place, but I wouldn't grow a lawn there. Grass does have a way of adding little spots of color to an otherwise pretty uniform terrain piece, so putting some on is, as far as I'm concerned, a pretty good idea.

I completely agree with the platform - and I must confess to not really having thought about it until the other day when painting. Just focused on getting it done for some gaming. The next pieces will be more thought through. Added the grass and moss and I think it works pretty well - not to be overdone as I want it to be a waste/bombed out/dead city. Crazy Ivan also got his first overhaul.

Well, I certainly appreciate any mistakes you make, because I get to learn from them instead of making them myself.
