To get everything to work with the materials I have the walls have ended up needing to be 3 1/2" high. It does mean I've already got the basic shapes for the door frames sorted already and I can add some details to the walls pretty easily. The flooring will be made up of 3" squares which I need to work on. The stepped details will mainly be stuck in the bits box until I'm ready to add stuff to the scenery like banks of machines or lifts or other movable pieces. I think the main detailing will be with the supports at regular spacing and some form of lighting globes. Here's a mock up of some of the bits I have currently done (the Barry was a random item from the bits box):

Really happy with the support sections with the cables and pipes recessed into them. I think they'll be individually made as I've got a lot of the squared material left and a full sheet of the mesh plasticard.
Trying to decide if I do the door frames in the same way or leave them more solid with some form of keypad.
Guess I need to move from the mock up stage to finishing a section of wall and see what it's like with paint on.

Ended up ditching the smoothed out doorways and embraced the extra work involved in having them matching the ribbing. Think this pic gives a better indication of where I'm headed. Still lots of work to be done but I'm heading in the right direction finally.

Just been playing around with some rough sketches of possible layouts. Not sure if I want a few big open spaces or lots of smaller corridors. I've also got to decide if I want to keep this fairly generic or incorporate some imperial and admec icons into the mix. I could always make some additional tiles with eagle or cog symbols. And scatter them in the mix or add symbols to the walls.
While pondering I've sprayed some finished bits with a new pound shop spray. It's a grey matt car paint so hopefully it'll work as well as the usual matt black which they'd run out of. Lol ... As long as it sticks to the bits and gives me something to work from. Bit worried the plastic square stuff won't accept paint that well.
I'll give an update once it's dry.

Paints taken well so it's full steam ahead for trying to make a prototype. It won't go to waist either as the lads want a space station to play with. Think I'll make it a less detailed copy of what I'm aiming for on the finished model. So I'll use the flat detailed door frames and I'll add the support details without the pipes and wires inside it. The flooring will not have the textured detail either. Under pressure to have it finished already so we'll see how long it takes to complete.

Here's the door frame and supports I've built and undercoated. Will work on doing more once I've finished the one I'm doing for the lads. From how this is going I think I'll need to either lower the walls or make there more than 6" between the closest walls. It looks cool but will be a pain in the backside to play on as it'll be impossible to get down to the models eye level to see line of sight.

Here's where I'm at: Still need to add detail and possibly another door to one of the longer walls. I've just tacked the walls together with a little bit of tape so you can see where I'm up to. Looking good but still can't see whether you're going for normal or sliding doors Going for a sliding door but not one that goes into the wall section. Like all good spaceships the doors will drop down from above:

Rummaging through the bits boxes and have come up with some interesting bits. I've bagged up the bits I'm going to try to incorporate and where they'll need chopping up I've done it to one piece so I can more easily remember what the idea behind it. For example this light: I'll be looking to use the actual light fitting as a light but pointy bit up, the little circular light from about half way down as a recessed light, the skull as a skull and the base possibly inverted as some sort of support for something raised up or if I can find a chunky looking cable as an energy connection into some form of machine. This light: The light fitting either as some form of sensor or light and the supporting part as a support for cables running high up on the walls. Then these lights: Are just begging to be converted into a conversion beamer but aside from that stuck with some other funky bits could work as some form of energy capacitor (like you see in the movies with lightning jumping between 2 points). This support: Is going to be chopped up for the bottom bit which will be either a mag lock to hold cargo containers in place or to come down from the ceiling to act as a more robust looking light. The skull in a box will be attached next to locks and wired into them to act a servo skull type scanner a bit like the leaked pics from the new hydra kit with a servo skull looking unit wired in to the targeting gubbins. As I was thinking of cargo containers I ended up knocking one up out of 2 old necromunda bulkheads and some card. Since the pic below was taken and uploaded I've trimmed off the connectors from the tops of the bulkheads: I can see me coming back to do some more containers and some other scenery using the bulkheads in the near future. Think that's about it for tonight. Feeling like I've got a fair bit done for once!

Love the heavy duty file in the background - containers pretty good too.

Looks like the space station for the lads is getting some major extensions as I've been reliably informed it needs an airlock and 2 extra rooms plus a launch pad! So I think I've got my work cut out for me. I've managed to get a further 3 containers started and awaiting a further item being consumed so I can get addition cardboard. I got gripped by the wife trying to acquire packaging before the content of the boxes has been finished. Lol ... So now the lads are on material collection duties. As I've been folding a single sheet of cardboard for the container rather than cutting 4 separate bits they're a lot more ridgid than I originally expected. Which is since little bonus. The scenery for playing 30k/40k will be mainly made up of 1' x 1' tiles. They're big enough to add details on the walls without getting hands caught on the details.

The wife says I'll hoard anything if she'll let me. Yesterday I finally got some kudos for the hoarding random bits of cardboard from a board game. Here's the start of the lads landing pad: I there wasn't enough of the textured stuff to just glue it straight on the back of the sheet so I chopped up lots of little squares just big enough to cover each of the holes. Ended up still having half the sheet of texture stuff left. Aim to have all 5 cargo containers finished plus the launch pad today.

Let the lads raid my bits boxes and we now have little lights at each corner and it's standing on 4 legs. Now it's on stilted legs were going to. Be making some form of ramp. Starting to think I might have to "borrow" it every now and again.

Ended up just doing 4 of the containers as I realised I've only got a few of the ones with doors on left. So they'll be retained for other builds. Really enjoying doing this build with the lads. Even more that building bits for myself. It seems the level of detail in the final build for them isn't far off what is do for myself. Lol ... Wonder how child proof it'll be.

Think I'm almost finished with detailing the cargo crates and now ready for paint: Just need to decide if I should add a vent/grill on the side: Now I'm looking at the pics there's not that much difference. Not sure it's worth the effort. Also what is with GWS design logic? Or should that be lack of. Looking at adding some ladders to the landing pad: And found the skull detailing is on upside down. So you either have the runs upside down or the skulls upside down: It makes no sense at all.
