Anyone have any experience of using real twigs on bases to represent trees? I am looking at making a scenic base with lots of trees on, I have some nice twigs/ branches courtesy of an afternoon stroll today but even after various internet searches I cannot find a definitive "yes you can" or "no you can't" answer to using them or not...
As far as actually getting them onto the base- no problems there, I am happy enough with placing/ gluing etc all I am concerned about is how long they will last, do I need to seal them (PVA glue I'm thinking?) I intend to paint them anyway so don't need to preserve the colour.
Anyone ever used real twigs and/ or branches then? Any tips?

No actual experience of using them but I would imagine that the main potential problem is going to be the twigs getting brittle as they dry out. Consequently I'd expect that if you were to dry them out first and then 'wet' them by soaking them in heavily thinned enamel paint, pulling them out and leaving them to dry, you'd effectively be replacing the water in the twigs cellular structure with enamel which should make them, at least, less brittle - in theory Let us know how you get on with them

Not used myself but if I was going to I would try drying in the oven (not too hot) and then dipping in something once cooled. Will be interesting what you come up with.

Don't overthink it. Drying them should be more than enough.

So drying them out in an oven prior to using sounds like the way to go yes? Then maybe seal them with thinned down PVA glue once they have cooled? Ok, day off tomorrow, will get some work done FK

Ok, branches dried out for 15 minutes at 200c and left to cool. This is where I am at so far then, I will get some better pics when it doesn't just look like a random pile of twigs and milliput... [/URL] FK

Bit late to this thread, but that's looking cool. I know that some people on the webs talk about using herbs for leaves. I can't remember which though.

Cheers Paul, I will have some updated pics tomorrow on my day off. Herbs for leaves eh? Good idea, probably won't be using many leaves on the actual branches but I will scatter some round on the base FK

Ok, revenant titan and his twiggy base is now ready to paint. I was given this kit as payment for assembling 2 of his brothers, fairly straighforward to put together just drilling and pinning almost everything, the arms/ body/ head are not locked in place just held on pins to make painting easier. I sealed the twigs and base with watered down PVA glue to hopefully make it last longer- the twigs feel `bendy` rather than brittle so hopefully, with a bit of care, it will last a while... FK

Now that does look good. Think the twigs work well and having a slight bend will definitely help make things last gaming wise.
