Leeked pictures from WD hint at 2 things coming. BA and 32mm bases. The new bases are shown on BA DC models with JP. GW may be tinkering with bases for JI. With that being said I have 20+JI that would need new bases and I have no interest in paying GW's prices.
I did a quick Yahoo search and couldnt find much. Anyone have ideas..........
Seems odd that this could happen without a new rule book but than again terminators made the change and TMK there was no new rule book at the time.

Me, I'm not going to change a thing. My models have the bases they were supplied with, and have always worked without problems. There is no need to replace existing bases.
Now, I can see why you might want to do that if you add to an existing force, so as to keep everything consitent, but that's about it. Truthfully I'd be more likely to put future Death Company on 25mm bases like the ones I already have than adopt the new bases...
As for alternatives, I don't know about 32mm bases. 30mm, yes (I think...), but not 32mm.
The change can happen because base sizes in 40k have very little impact, and the rulebook has no strict rules on base size because of it. Changing bases changes so little in the way a unit behaves, after you weigh the benefits against the drawbacks, that it does not matter whether there is a new rulebook or not. If I were to take a guess, I'd say that GW will release new generic Assault Marines with the Blood Angels codex and uses the opportunity to put them on a bigger base size, because recent jump troops have a habit of balancing on a tall piece of scenery, which changes their center of gravity and makes them tip over easier. Seraphim used to have that problem back in the day, as did the metal Raptors, but it seems more common today, for instance with Sanguinary Guard and Stormboyz having noticeable problems standing up.

So the answer is "because we can". Personally I'd base them all on the 20mm bases and ignore the 32mm ones.

Hmmm ... Well all these 25mm scenic bases I've cast up will get used with Imperial Guard models I need to work on and I'll just make some slightly larger bases for marines. Just need a source of 32mm bases to start from.

I got about the same responce in an email I sent the UK office after the US division said they have no idea. Enjoy my slightly less the polite (no swears) email and their response:
Team, So Blood Angles are coming out soon. Dont deny it. Ive seen leaked pictures of the new Tact squad box. Fine. I dont play BA. I do play 40k but not BA. Why 32mm bases for Marines now? Past rule books (I dont have 7th) stated 'use base supplied'. Fine. Some Marines have 25s. Now BA are 32s. Why are they different? GW being GW who cannot make up their minds. Whats stopping somone from still using 25s? Nothing really. Somone best make up their minds about this issue. You really think Im going to buy 10x32mm bases for the $5 price. No. No way I can afford the price nor do I have the time to glue them on 100 plus Marines. Ill keep my marines on 25s and Ill build any more I need to be on 25s. This is a cross roads moment for me and GW. Do I stay and continue to play a game I love OR do I walk and play some other game. Thanks, Jason USA PS I know this is the sales team email so please pass this along
Responce:
Hi Jason
Thanks for the email.
The new 32mm bases were a design choice made by the sculptors, to make the miniatures look more imposing. There is no specific base that you have to use for your army, so should you wish to mount them on the smaller 25mm bases this is fine, but if you would rather have the slightly larger 32mm base, this is also fine.
I hope that this helps, but if you need anything further, please let me know. Kind regards NAME WITHHELD
My responce (copied from my phone):
IF thats an offical responce than it needs to be announced. Various fan sites are on fire over this. What next..grots on 10mm bases???
If it aint broke, dont fix.
Jason
I know I may have given them a bad idea with the grots but it perhaps points out how silly this 32mm base thing is. I myself will not switch out. There are no DA models (at this time) on 32s so 25 will continue to be what I use.
