So whilst waiting for the start of 'a tale of fantasy gamers' in January, I have developed a bit of a painting itch again.
I was sat trawling GW's site looking for something to 'go to town on' much like i did when i painted my riptide up. I was't really having much luck when Carol reminded me i had a helldrake in bits in amongst a ton of other bits and pieces. So a fair bit of foraging and i have a helldrake that's just missing a single claw, nothing major, it may turn up or it can just be 'battle damaged'.
That lead to my previous thread about identifying a paint, as i want to paint the helldrake in the manner of the brass scorpion model by Mark Bedford. It may lead to an army it may not i don't really know, but i do have some other chaos bits on sprues and also have a fondness for the Berzerkers and some of the newer chaos kits.
Now though (as i sit and wait for my paint order to arrive) i come to my current conundrum. How to base what could turn into a large, brass and shiny red army.
I am right out of ideas as i don't really know what will work.
I see the models lost in the normal field type setting, also don't see it working well over a desert theme.
Pondering some sort of cityfight look as i think the red/brass my stand out against the bland grey of an imperial city.
But in all honesty i don't really know which way to go yet with the base...welcoming ideas!

So a bit more rummaging around and i have found the missing claw...and a bunch of bits from a city fight kit. I was thinking of doing the base like this.... Paint the area in front of the walls to look like a road and the area behind to be gravelled and painted to look like the courtyard in front of a building. Unfortunately this is the only base i have for a large flyer so i am committed to the position of the flying stem as it had been glued down previously. Thoughts?

A sharp knife could help you with the stem. I think the idea is cool, and that you should definitely go ahead with it, but I think it needs a bit more context. Like the gate just standing there all by itself without even a hind of a wall, ruined or otherwise, to either side of it. Personally I'd also make the front look like your regular concrete or tarmac road and the sidewalk paved with big stone using (plasti)card. As for painting, you mentioned desert already. Why not make a desert colored stone instead of the standard gray? I've had a lot of fun with ochre and beige in the past. It'll still work with a gold bird, too. Also I'm not sure painting the base to look like a road will do. Is the surface detailed enough for it? It might look odd. If you add a layer of texture onto it, it'll allow you to include details like a gutter or metal inserts into the road, or make it look like prefabricated slabs of concrete neatly put together to form a road.

Snow bases work quite well. They're a good contrast

I need to do something cool like this for my Heldrake's base...

Must admit i'm sat here looking at the base and utterly unconvinced about it. But not really sure what direction to take either with it, or for an alternative base. My riptide base was one of the best i had previously achieved and i want to match the level and if possible exceed it. I am going through a period of wanting to push myself but lacking the ideas right now

Had a long at other people's ones? I do remember seeing some cool ones, especially one where the Heldrake was obviously converted a bit as it was clinging to a building... Have to see if I can find it...

Would be awesome to do, specially since the fluff has it as a predator and animalistic!

Postie has been nice to me Hasn't solved the immediate basing issues, but it has given me something else to focus on this evening!

So everything is in place to start. But first i had to go for a nice long walk with the dog this morning. Naturally as is our way, the conversation gets to wargaming and carols confessing her dislike of anything 40k at the moment as nothing really 'grabs' her. I must admit to feeling the same way a lot of recent.
So the conversation drifts to wfb, she is well into building her tomb kings army and has a good chunk painted already. But she gets talking about her real love and thats the wood elves and old style undead. The old style undead aren't really achievable without a lot of expense for kitbashing. So she has settled on finishing her tomb kings off and waiting for the Wood Elf book to come out..one day...in a galaxy far far away.
In a meandering way the conversation comes on to my projects. I want to get into 40k and i don't. Nothing snaps my attention with any real vigor and most projects are just single models for the sake of it, But 40k seems to offer more of a chance to express a higher level of painting. WFB on the other hand does have my attention, maybe it's the excess of hobbit/lotr films at the moment. I am committed to next years 'tale of' projects and solidly liking the ogres for it. Relatively cheap and a chance to improve my flesh technique. They are not an army i love but a challenge and something different. But as is the way of these things, the conversation keeps on winding it's way through the realms of fantasy and slowly draws to a halt in the fact that the only love i really have is with the Brettonians as i like the old world arthurian chivalry and colorful knights feel of the army. This has me now scrambling for the brettonian bits i have laying about. But it comes with a big.... i don't know... curse might be the right word or it might not. The problem last time i tried was with finding the right heraldry and colour schemes. I don't know how many of you get this issue really. But it's like a mental block at times. The other issue is this real big one that affects all my painting at the moment. I seem to constantly want to over reach my painting ability. I will have an idea, try to put it into effect on a model. It will be more than i can achieve with my level of painting and in the end i will get frustrated and give up. This then taints any effort on the project and i give up. Any of you guys ever suffer this or have you had this issue and beaten it...if so how.

"Any of you guys ever suffer this or have you had this issue and beaten it...if so how." All the time mate, the way I get round it is to try something different. That's easy to say when I have at least 10 different hobby related projects constantly on the go, and especially as I don't seem to have time for any of them at the moment! The hobby itch just keeps building till I have another go at something I put down at an earlier period and often I find I can achieve what I set out to do! It's just practice and getting the right urge or motivation to do it!
