Just let me start off by saying....The rulebook for this game is a absolute nightmare. But don't let that put you off because beneath all the confusion, page flicking and head bashing. There is a fantastically fun game.
Beasts of War have a fantastic series of how to play videos and they are much needed, as you will learn more from them than the rulebook.
But the best way into the game is via one of Spartan Games demo team.
Alternate activations, massive naval guns, torpedoes, stuttering fields and the occasional spectacular explosion. This is all part of playing the game.
Once you have your head around the game it plays fine. To give an example. Turn 1 of our first game took nearly 2 hours, with all the flicking about, trying to find answers, failing and going to the beasts of war videos and some fb friends for answers. Turns 2-4 played in about 30 minutes for a small game. Ending when one ship took a massive battering and literally teleported straight off the board.
The models themselves are hit or miss. Some will appeal, some will repulse. The quality is great for such small minis. I had a problem with 1 of my Kingdom of Brittania frigates. I emailed spartan about it with a pic. 3 days later a replacement arrived.
Overall if you have the patience to tackle learning the game, or access to an experienced D-War player, then i would highly recommend giving the game a go.

I had the same issue when looking at the sci-fi version, blanking on the name right now, rulebook. There was no obvious link for the rules and went diving into advanced rules for things before even talking about how to move.

Firestorm armada i think. The game does work really well, it just needs a better laid out and explained rulebook.

They play this at our local club and I have the 4 original starter fleet boxes, I'll be painting them up soon...I hope i used to play uncharted seas which is the same game mechanics, that was fun I do remember blowing up a human battleship with my iron dwarf fleet and nearly decimating both fleets with all the secondary explosions Lol! great fun.

They have halved the explosion-radius in MKII Probably for the best, because spectacular and a good laugh as they were, these chain-reactions usually meant the end of the game. I play US and I must say the rulebook is very simple, straightforwards, easy to use and is free for downloading (even though I also bought the hardcover, I printed the PDF in GWS-starterbox-rulesset-size to take along to my games) Here's a couple of images from my last game :
