I'm going to be assembling a decent sized Goblin/Night Goblin force for my brother, there's going to be a good mix of models used new and old school. I have got a few questions though the main question is what minimum size unit of Goblins should I be looking at assembling? Does 50 strong sound right?
Anyone got any hints or tips on starting up with them?

Actually that makes me think that I need to swot up on the Warhammer rules again. But isn't there a thing about having uber-sized core units?

10 frontage allows an extra rank to fight. So a unit armed with spears goes to attack with 3 ranks!!!

That means a 10x5 unit would do a lot of damage. Rather unwieldy for maneuvers. Sounds like a good idea for gobbos though!

I'd look for lots of fanatics, especially the older ones. I think GW sells them on their website.

Indeed. You want Fanatics. Lots of them.
How many Goblins you play also depends on how much you want to spend on Core and how you want to use Fanatics. I've seen people play four or five ranks, either with minimum front of five, or ten for the horde bonus. What I've seen as a popular choice is three units with bows and maximum fanatics. Realistically, sending Goblins into combat will only result in their death without proper support. Bows are easier to use, because you get to do damage from afar, only lose one rank of attacks (Goblin quality attacks) compared to spears, and always have your Fanatics to scare off enemy units bent on getting into close combat with you.
So yeah, fifty per regiment with a ten wide ranks sounds good to me.

i used to have a 'Fanatic delivery system' ... i mean a night gobbo army you'll either win spectacularly or die horribly there is no middle ground with this army.

That's the type of FUN I want to go for. Random bouncing around. Think the Squigs need to be expanded a lot more as well as they have lots of randomness to them. So maximum numbers of Fanatics, loads of Snotlings just because and plenty of squigs. Oooo ... Can't forget the snotling pump wagon and giant as well. Think I can see the direction the army is going in now.

Anything that is random and you'll never get bored of the army...
