We are all gamers and hobbyists at heart.
But sometimes i am sure we all get a bit giggly, a bit silly and get tempted to build models/lists that are unfeasibly expensive in money or points. Those 1 shot wonders that we all know can deliver the killing blow to a game, or die unused and wipe out over half of your own army.
My question to you guys is..
Rule of cool risk or common tactical sense.
Just for the explanation, an example.
Death Company Dreadnought, Blood talons. 10 Death Company, Thunder Hammer, 2 x Power Fists, 2 x Power Swords, 2 Hand Flamers, Lemartes, Jump Packs. All hitching a lift on Storm Raven, extra armour, meltas, lascannon, hurricane bolters.
Now that little lot would make an interesting centre piece for an army, but it would costs 1000pts dead. Pros If it hits it is extremly killy, storm raven can provide threats once the cargo is dropped. DC+Dread are capable of tearing a hole in a lot of battle lines. Psychological threat would see it feared. Cons 1000pts of an army in a big target labelled 'just shoot me'.
So whats your thoughts on the expensive rule of cool units over common sense tactical approach.

For me it depends. I kind of role play my armies. If the background suggests a serious approach to war, I am more likely to build the army to that trait and make it functional. If the background suggests complete lunacy, lunacy is what you get. If the background leaves the choice to the player, I tend to gravitate towards lunacy. As such my tiny Tau army is composed for mutual support of its units, forming a sound little strike force with barely any expensive units, and those that are get specialized with only those upgrades they need. It's very utilitarian. My Chaos, on the other hand, defies all conventional army building wisdom. Or so I am told by narrow-minded fools. I do build with my opponent's enjoyment in mind, though. My expensive, powerful units tend to be more WTF powerful than smash anything in their path powerful. I'm not comfortable creating units that cannot be countered unless you have very specific means. I do believe in strategy, though, and don't mind using units that are tough unless you outwit me. Ultimately anything I play is balanced out by my atrocious dice rolls anyway, so power units don't work for me as well as they should anyway. Makes it easier for everyone involved to see them as a fun addition to the game rather than a element of frustration.

The funny thing is you look at the tournament lists and they all seem to finding combos like this that do just wipe the floor with everything they touch. With me I also try to build a "balanced" army that has a solution for everything, that however generally turns into a jack of all trades army that inevitably gets pounded because it's a master of none!

Of course the 40k noob in me missed the point that the above list wouldn't be stormraven compatible as you can only transport 6 jump pack models. 5dc + lemartes.

Unless you desperately want to win (tournaments etc) then go with what looks cool, my armies are totally impractical for winning games (they occasionally do) but I like how they look, I have a nob biker unit of 6 models that I can easily tool up to well over 500 points, a lot of points to tie up in a small unit? Or a hell of a lot of fun to build/ paint/ pop down on the battlefield? I'll let you decide what you think my opinion is on this FK

Rule of cool always! My 2000 mini meet ork army is 35 orks, 3 battlewagons and 2 trukks. Admittedly all 35 orks are in mega armour, but that's still only 35 minis! May not win a lot but it'll be easier to carry than my normal 2k orks army! LOL

Rule of cool ... It's why I've got a 10 man Wolf Guard Pack with jump packs 5 have a pair of wolf claws the other 5 have thunder hammers/storm shields.

It's also why I have the intention at some stage to make a "Four Paws Good, Two Paws Bad" Space Wolf Army using only Thunderwolves and Fenrisian Wolves. It'll not win a damned thing, but heck it's just about the only thing retaining my interest in 40k atm, and besides - one of my friends just gave me the Wolf Lord on T/Wolf and 5 T/Wolves for nothing a couple of days ago so that gives me something like 14-15 T/Wolves. Canis leads the gang and I've around 40+ Fenrisians so there you go: loads of doggie doo but a very different army. Shooting phase? What Shooting Phase? Storm Shields are far more important than Bolt Pistols.

Seems to be a lot of cool with the wolves. 4k of drop-podding fur is always going to be fun. The thunder wolf army might well be the next expansion. I don't think they like pods too much though

Hehe! Ask the guys at the Euromeet a couple of years ago about an all Thunderwolf/Fenrisian wolves army! It's great fun and you can win, as I did with an annihilation in one of the games I have played with them, it really is an all or nothing army, but looks so cool!

Facing 20+ Thunderwolves across the table is a very scary thing - but, at least, it doesn't hurt for long....
