Thread title pretty much says it all really, I ran out of Humbrol Field Grey Enamel which I paint the edges of my bases with, not to worry, I've got a 'new' (probably bought this millennium) pot, gave it a good shaking followed by a good stirring, painted the base of my new warboss with it and about 8 hours later it was still tacky. So, I wiped it all off with a rag, re-shook the paint, really stirred the paint with a bit of brazing rod, re-painted the base and ten hours later it's still tacky. So, has anyone got an ultrasonic cleaner, have you tried mixing paint with it and did it work? Answers and opinions much appreciated.

I've got an ultrasonic but I've never used it to mix paint. I don't think the vibrations would be big enough if I'm honest

I've never tried it but if you left the paint in long enough, it would mix. I guess it would need a bit of a trial to get the length required worked out. You would need to immerse the pot of paint in fluid though... so there is a possibility of catastrophic leakage

Thanks for the replies chaps, I realise that the vibes aren't going to be huge but they are going to be incessant - though the catastrophic leakage is definitely something worth thinking about

If you got to BnQ they use a vibration thing to mix paint I'm fairly sure it would work as long as it's sealed well.

I would not use the ultrasonic to mix paint with. Its not powerful enough for the job, and the cleaning up would be a major hassle! Especially with enamel paints!

Thanks Guys, went on eBay last night and bought a 1.3 litre jobbie (got one I thought was a reasonable price, paid for it, got a 'people who bought this also looked at these' message, looked at it and there's the exact same one £15 cheaper from someone else - way to go PayPal, that's a really smart way to hack off your customers ) so I'll be giving it a go and let you know how I get on.

A sonic bath can also be used for stripping/cleaning... so it will be handy for other things as well as mixing paint.

Well, I can't complain about the delivery times, it turned up today about 34 hours after I ordered it
Tried it out on some Vallejo paints that had refused to mix by shaking 'til my arm was falling off, tumbling in an 'automatic watch winder' several times, sitting on the washing machine while it was spin drying etc. - gave them about ten minutes (put the pots inside a couple of plastic bags first to reduce the chance of 'catastrophic leakage') a nd didn't notice any appreciable improvement in the mix. Then tried giving the enamel a go for fifteen minutes - which has already been stirred on three separate occasions but after ultrasonic shaking it is at least the right colour now. One thing I hadn't taken into account was that the ultrasonic vibes heat up the water, it started off at about 10 Centigrade and 25 minutes of operation took it up to 42 Centigrade and it's probably not a good idea to get paints up to that kind of temperature if you're expecting to keep them. I can always use it for cleaning my airbrush.
Guess I'll just have to knock up a crank operated crate shaker for the Vallejo's, something I've been trying to avoid since I bought them.
Thanks again for all the advice

I saw a bloke on youtube using a jig saw and a clamp for shaking paint. He just removed the blade, fitted the clamp where the blade should go and then fit the pot to the clamp... here it is:

Sweet, I haven't seen any of those clamps small enough to fit into a jigsaw blade holder (the blue & yellow suggests Revell) but I could possibly get a similar effect using a jubilee clip - which would probably hold the Vallejo pots better. Thanks for that, much appreciated.

I know Garfy made a whisk for his Dremmel to mix his paint

Hmmm ... I've got a jigsaw and a lot of paint needing mixing. Think I'm going to invest in one of those clamps.

I know Garfy made a whisk for his Dremmel to mix his paint Sounds A LOT like a lidless blender (The problem with mixing Vallejo paints is the eye-dropper bottles they put the paint into - which is difficult to get a stirring stick into. They use the same bottles for their 'Air' range, which I find odd as everyone I know who sprays professionally tells me to always stir the paint, never shake it)
